RV Waste Water Treatment Products

Be careful of the treatments you use in your RV Holding Tanks. The EPA has published a report for RV owners about Safe RV Waste Water which lists several Dangerous Chemicals you should avoid using in your RV Holding Tanks.

The University of Arizona also suggests to Avoid Chemical RV Holding Tank Treatments.

3. Enzymatic RV Waste Water Treatments

Enzymatic Treatments use synthetically created Enzymes. Synthetic Enzymes are capable of breaking down organic matter but cannot multiply and do not eliminate the source causing the problem. They need beneficial bacteria to digest the organic matter.

Unfortunately, these Enzymatic Treatment products may also contain fragrances and harsh chemicals. These chemicals can harm or kill beneficial bacteria, negating the potential benefit of using enzymes.

Nutrient enhancement of RV Waste Water is positive sounding phrase. However, under normal conditions, RV Waste Water already contains plenty of material ready to be broken down into nutrients. That is as long as the natural bacteria are healthy and there is no nutrient overload.

Excessive amounts of nutrients entering lakes, rivers and the sea can lead to a significant increase in water pollution problems which decrease Water Quality. Reductions in Water Quality can lead to decrease in fish productivity and increase the potential for harmful algae blooms. Therefore, Nutrient Enhancement Products are often not beneficial to our environment.

5/ Home Made RV Waste Water Treatments

Many home made RV Waste Water Treatments, also called "RV Holding Tank Home Brews" are mixtures consisting of household cleaners and disinfectants. These "Home Brews" often contain Dangerous Chemicals that can retard or kill Beneficial Bacteria in your RV Holding Tanks.

The Washington State Department of Transportation states that the use of "Home Brews" in RV Holding Tanks should be avoided. The claim that the proportions of each ingredient is not established and the quantities required to control odors and create sufficient biological activity are unproven.

They also state that some "Home Brews" can cause damage to toilet seals and valves. In addition, "Home Brews" may also cause a temporary shock to biological sewage treatment systems under certain conditions.
