Most RV Holding Tank Problems go unnoticed until odors, clogs or other causes bring them to our attention.
Major RV Holding Tank Problems
One of the major problems is that of treating
your Wastewater with RV Holding Tank Chemical
Treatments can Create Water Pollution Problems. One way Chemicals can
create problems in the Septic and Waste Water Systems receiving your RV Waste Water is by
Killing Bacteria.
Open RV Drains Create Holding Tank Problems
Man RVer's are guilty of a common mistake when at a site with full hook-ups. They
leave the RV Black Water Holding Tank Drain Valve in the open position.
It is a common misunderstanding that by doing this they won't have to worry about the Black Water Holding Tank
filling and overflowing.
This practice creates several
problems:
* If you are using chemicals, they will be quickly flushed and the chance for foul odors is
increased
* Open valves allow solids to build-up and harden on the tank bottom
* The build-up of solids decreases tank storage capacity
* Solid build up can create a dream environment for harmful bacteria and a dangerous
health risk for you
* Removing solid build up can be very costly
Faulty Gages Create RV Holding Tank Problems
One of the most common RV Holding Tank Problems is inaccurate or faulty readings of gages that monitor RV
Holding Tank Levels. Check to make sure your gages are in working condition.
If they are not, then the problem is probably caused by build up of tissue, soaps, oils, grime and
sludge on the gage probes inside the tank.
If repeated rinsing and cleaning of your tanks do not rectify the problem, you have a few options:
* Have the tank professionally cleaned using high pressure water
* Have the probes replaced.
Vents Can Cause RV Holding Tank Problems
Another important component of an RV Waste Water System is the vent that
allows air flow into the tanks to promote bacterial growth. They also allow odors and gases to escape from the
holding tanks.
Another important aspect of RV Waste Water Storage is
understanding the dynamics of holding tank venting. Each holding tank must be vented from the
holding tank up and through the roof to the outside of the RV. The typical vent consists of 1-1/2” plastic
piping.
Vent Pipe Standards (NFPA 1192 Standards) on Recreational Vehicles state.
“Each vent pipe shall pass through the roof and terminate vertically, undiminished in size, not less than
2-inches above the roof.”
Check to make sure the vent pipe is not less than 2-inches above the roof. If it is not, then it is possible for
tank odors to pass up the vent pipe and come back down. They can also make their way into the RV living area.

Vents Can Help RV Holding Tank Problems
Replacing stock sewer vents with after market, add-on products is another solution to venting problems. Popular
solutions include weather vane type vent caps.
Several manufacturer's have roof vents that operate using the Venturi Effect. The venturi effect is created when
air, as it is passes through the vent decreases the static atmospheric pressure inside the holding tank.
This type of vent literally draws vapors and subsequent odors out of the tank through the roof vent pipe.
According to one manufacturer, a 1-MPH breeze entering the vent opening creates 4-MPH air movement inside the vent
pipe.
