RV Grey Waste Water Holding Tank

Also Needs Your Attention

The RV Grey Waste Water Holding Tank is part of the RV Waste Water System for your recreational Vehicle. Wastes that accumulates in the Grey Water Holding Tank are the waste water from the kitchen sink or galley sink, the bathroom sink, and the shower or tub. Basically it is the liquid wastes from washing and cleaning.

Since only wastes from washing and cleaning  collect in the Grey Water Holding Tank it needs less attention than your Black Water Tank.

The Grey Water Holding Tank typically causes fewer problems and the problems tend to be less severe.

RV Grey Waste Water Holding Tank

Most Recreational Vehicles have one Grey Water Holding Tank. Some RV's also have a separate Holding Tank that holds the Wastewater from the kitchen and/or bar sinks.

Grey Water Wastes contain soaps, greases and food wastes from washing, cleaning and cooking. Because most of these wastes do not contain Natural Bacteria, there is little if any Bacterial Digestion that takes place.

In order to eliminate odors and keep the Waste Water flowing, RVer's again add chemicals to the Grey water Tank in an attempt to control odors.

Again, most RV Holding Tank Chemical Treatments are designed to preserve wastes and mask odors until they are dumped into a Septic or Waste Water Treatment System.

RV Grey Waste Water Holding Tank Odors

It is a misconception that only the Black Water Holding Tank can have odor problems. Your RV Grey Waste Water Holding Tank(s) can also have odor problems. Many RVer's are not aware that waste water in their Grey Water Holding Tank(s) can also create odor problems.

Grey Water Tank odor problems include bacterial growth from a buildup of food particles and grease, particularly after storing the RV for an extended period. There are many products on the market that deal with this problem. However, most only preserve the wastes and mask odors with stronger scents.

The best way to eliminate odor problems in your Grey water Tank is to use a Bacterial Digestant Treatments. This type of Biological product will digest the cause of the odor problem, not just preserve and mask the odor until you dump.

Odor Free RV Grey Water Holding Tank

If you use the RV for more than a week with the Grey Water Holding Tank Valve open, then a good practice is to periodically close the valve. After closing,
add the Holding Tank Treatment Product you use and allow the tank to fill. Once full,
pull the drain and empty the tank. This helps flush out any buildup of soaps and greases.

To ensure your Grey Water Tank remains fresh and odor free, add a Biological Holding Tank Treatment like Pure Power the next time you use your RV. Buy Pure Power Waste Digester and Odor Eliminator from Amazon.com.

Leave the tank valve closed until the tank fills through normal use. The
Bacteria will Digest any remaining greases, soaps and food wastes (organic matter) that remain in the tank. The next time you dump, observe the wastes when you dump through a clear connection.

If you are not using a good Grey Water Treatment product, the best ones to use are all natural Bacterial Digestant Treatments. They are designed to digest the Organic Wastes in your Grey Waste Water Holding Tank(s). Buy RV Digest It 32 Oz from Amazon.com

Disposal Of RV Grey Waste Water

Some of the basic rules that all RVer's should follow when it comes to disposal of the Waste Water in their Grey Waste Water Holding Tank(s) Include:

  • Never use a fresh water hose to flush your Holding Tanks
  • Dump your Grey Water Tank after the Black Water Tank
  • Do not leave Grey Water Valves open while parked long term
  • Carry a spare Heavy Duty Sewer Hose for emergencies
  • Clean up after you dump

Once your tanks are empty, put the hose away and rinse down any spills that might have occurred. If you are using a Bacterial Digestant Product, spray some on any spill areas. These products will digest any remaining wastes you can't see and eliminate any odors.

Add the Bacterial Digestant Treatments you are using and add a few gallons of water. This will eliminate odors and aid in the digestion of any organic wastes that are left in your RV Grey Waste Water Holding Tank(s).
